that I have realized improvement with my golf game. Most importantly, we have adopted new friends with the members and their family.
The Filipino League of Golfers (FLOG) club is just one of the several Filipino golf clubs in the Chicago area. They were formed as all the others may have initially to foster camaraderie amongst their circle of friends. But as it grows, fun, excitement, and competition are now reasons for their existence.
In June of 2006 the FLOG club hosted the Philippine Independence Day Golf Tournament which was held at the Indian Lakes resort & country club in Bloomingdale, Illinois. This tournament is hosted by a different Filipino golf club every year. With more than ten participating clubs, it is an honor for a club to be granted the opportunity. The hosting club bears the immense headache of its preparation but is rewarded with the net proceeds of the tournament which does not commensurate with the hard work it involved.
The tournament proceeds achieved by the FLOG group in 2006 was put to used when it formed an Outreach Program to provide for the less fortunate sector of the Philippines. In 2006 the Outreach Program was able to build two artesian wells, one in Mandaue, Cebu and the other in Meycauayan, Bulacan. The artesian wells provided a much needed source of clean water to the area. They also teamed up with the “Central United Methodist Church, Manila” and sponsored their Christmas Outreach Program which provided gifts, food, free hair cut and a day full of fun to a village.
To continue its effort of providing assistance to the less fortunate sector of the Philippines, the FLOG group has scheduled one Saturday event of the season to be an invitational tournament where its proceeds will be devoted to funding the causes of the Outreach Program.
I am proud of what the FLOG club has done. Can you imagine the effect if the many Filipino sports club in the area have an Outreach Program to benefit our homeland?
